About Your Guide

ABOUT YOUR GUIDE

Hi! I’m your guide Will Mackaness.

And I love skiing and ski touring.. The feeling of surfing on snow brings excitement with each new season. I enjoy the slow and thoughtful mountain experience, cardio workout and tracksetting puzzles that only touring can provide.

I’m also a keen adventurer. I thrive from the diversity of new landscapes, places and cultures. The idea of skiing a new mountain range in a foriegn land brings me pure excitement.

My passion for skiing and adventure has led me to ski, study and work for the past 15 years in the Canadian Rockies, the Columbia and Coastal Mountains of British Columbia and the Japanese Alps.

I have a degree in Adventure Eco Tourism and an Adventure Guide diploma. I am a proud working member of the ACMG in the Ski Guiding and Rock guiding specialty streams. I have spent the last 10 years continually training and working in the Canadian ski guiding industry.

I’m excited to guide you in Japan for the best powder skiing adventure of your life!!

GUIDING PHILOSOPHY

ROOTED IN BACKCOUNTRY TOURING

My background is deeply rooted in ski touring, it’s what I do recreationally and It’s why I became a guide. I love the whole ski touring experience. Not much for the noise and rush of mechanized guiding, I much prefer the human powered experience, and ski tour is 100% of my work.

SAFETY & SKIING TO THE CONDITION

Safety is not to be compromised, and skiing to the avalanche conditions makes guiding sense. Guiding doesn’t mean conservative skiing, it means quite the opposite, it means having the professional level training, experience and terrain knowledge to find the best skiing opportunities in any conditions.

Canada has the largest backcountry skiing industry world, the industry and guide training is highly developed and this has lead to ACMG ski guides as being the most respected ski guides in the world. I have spent the last 10 years training and working in the Canadian avalanche industry.

TRACK SETTING EFFICIENCY

As a highly trained ski touring professional, efficient track setting is one of my most effective tools. This means choosing the lowest angle terrain possible, and setting a consistent climbing angle that keeps your heart rate low and ticking along at its most efficient. I expend my energy so you can get more vertical out of your legs every day.

COLLABORATIVE MOVEMENT

One of the joys of backcountry ski touring is the social environment, touring through the mountains while sharing the experience with other rad people is pure joy. I support this in my guiding, we ski tour as a group, we take brakes together and no one gets left behind. We may spread out given avalanche travel best practice although our collaborative movement is what gets us all to the top.

COMPANY VALUES

Success in my business is providing you with an experience that stands out from the rest. This means paying careful attention to the weather, snow conditions and knowing the terrain intimately. Although it’s also about creating opportunities that set all of us up for success.  It’s about delivering the goods in just the right way.

AN EDUCATIONAL COMPONENT

Each and every trip starts with an Avalanche companion rescue refresher, we will focus on the latest industry best practice, and group safety in the Japanese backcountry ski environment. Educational also means deep powder skiing tips, and little efficiencies that I have learnt along the way. I might also nuge you just a little outside of your steep skiing comfort zone, this is where the learning happens.

NO DISCRIMINATION

I don’t discriminate based on the number of planks you ride. Actually snowboarders are fun to watch and In fact, I used to be one, so I have an excellent awareness of how terrain affects the rider and what you like to ride. Actually, Japan’s deep powder and natural half pipes temps me daily to get back on the board.

A HOLISTIC ADVENTURE

You have come to Japan for the powder although it’s the people, their culture and that difference that you will fall in love with. Each day we incorporate as much Japanese culture as possible, this means sampling the onsens, going out for traditional Japanese cuisine and exploring the local towns. Guiding doesn’t just finish with the skiing

A DYNAMIC ADVENTURE

Adventure is an unusual and exciting experience with an element of the unknown. As your guide, I cannot foresee all the exciting and unusual things that will take you on a whim, although I can be flexible to allow for those opportunities to be explored.

AFFORDABILITY

Wealth does not favour the most adventurous, hardest working, or even those with the most supreme of morals. I don’t believe this should be a barrier to life’s greatest experiences. You also deserve the best powder on the planet!
